For people in the Northeast, East Gippsland, West and South Gippsland, Alpine and parts of the Northern Country, North Central and Central Forecast Districts.
Issued at 7:55 pm Saturday, 6 March 2010.
Severe thunderstorms are likely to produce damaging winds, very heavy rainfall, flash flooding and large hailstones in the warning area over the next several hours. Locations which may be affected include Shepparton, Seymour, Wangaratta, Morwell, Traralgon, Sale, Moe, Bairnsdale and Orbost.
Hail between 2cm and 5cm has been reported from thunderstorms this afternoon in several suburbs of Melbourne including North Melbourne, Ascot Vale, Heathmont, Mt Waverley and Melton. Hail as big as 10cm has been reported in Ferntree Gully.
Wind gusts to around 100 km/hr have been recorded at Melbourne Airport and Latrobe Valley.
Significant rainfall totals have been recorded during the afternoon, including; 67mm at Maribyrnong
54mm at Rockbank, 52mm at Traralgon, 48mm at Cowwarr Weir 46mm at Latrobe Valley 45mm at Footscray
The State Emergency Service advises that people should:
* Keep clear of fallen power lines.
* secure any loose objects in the vicinity of your home.
* keep away from creeks and drains.
* do not drive vehicles through flooded areas.
* stay indoors if possible.
* Avoid using the phone during the storm.
* if you are outside, avoid sheltering under trees
* listen to the radio for storm updates
* switch off your computer and electrical appliances
