NSW Severe Weather Warning: Hazardous Winds
Source: Bureau of Meteorology

For people in
Alpine areas of the Southern Tablelands and South West Slopes above 1900 metres.

Issued at 4:20 pm on Tuesday 24 August 2010

Synoptic Situation: 3:00 pm EST Tuesday
A cold front is expected to cross southern New South Wales tonight. A vigorous west to northwesterly airstream is developing over alpine areas ahead of this system. Winds are expected to ease slightly during Wednesday as the front moves away, although remaining gusty as another system passes over during Thursday.

In areas above 1900 metres, winds are expected to average over 80 km/h this evening and early Wednesday. Peak wind gusts may exceed 125 km/h.

Blizzard conditions are likely about the peaks.

Emergency services advise you to keep clear of fallen power lines, stay indoors away from windows and keep children indoors.

The National Parks and Wildlife Service recommends that people consider postponing back country travel until conditions improve.

For emergency help in floods and storms, ring the SES [NSW and ACT] on telephone number 132 500.
