Weather Situation

A series of active cold fronts will affect Victoria over the next two days. A large and intense low pressure system southwest of Tasmania will move steadily eastwards during the week, passing Tasmania on Thursday. During today a cold front will reach southwestern Victoria early this afternoon before extending to central areas this evening.

Damaging northwesterly winds averaging 50 km/h with peak gusts around 90 km/h are forecast for the Alpine Areas forecast districts later today.

Damaging west to northwesterly winds averaging 50 km/h with peak gusts around 90 km/h are forecast for the Western, Central and West and South Gippsland forecast districts as the cold front moves through during the afternoon and evening.

The State Emergency Service advises that people should:

* People should not park or shelter under trees.
* Secure or put away loose items around your house, yard and balcony.
* Keep clear of fallen power lines.
* For emergency help in floods and storms, ring your local SES Unit on 132 500.
