TAS Flood Watch: Northern, Western and Southern rivers |
 |
Source: Bureau of Meteorology
Issued at 10:30am on Saturday the 4th of September 2010
A Flood Watch continues for all northern rivers, and is extended to western and
southern rivers.
Statement:
Rain has commenced about the state, with the approaching low still to bring
moderate to locally heavy rain and thunderstorms in the north during Saturday,
before easing and contracting to the west and south during Sunday.
In the north, widespread totals of 30 to 40 mm are expected, with falls up to
100 mm anticipated on the northern slopes of elevated areas, particularly in the
northeast quarter and along the Western Tiers. Similar rainfall totals can be
expected in the west, less in the south, overnight Saturday and during Sunday
morning.
Most river systems carry strong flows from rainfall over recent weeks. Further
rain today is likely to cause high levels of flooding in the north by late
Saturday evening. Flooding is likely in western and southern rivers by late
Sunday evening.
Flash flooding is a concern in many areas, particularly when rainfall rates are
expected to be at their heaviest.
Strong and dangerous flows will be a hazard in most rivers and streams. Low
level roads and bridges may be at risk to flooding.
Weather Outlook:
Rain extending statewide during the morning, with locally heavy falls and
possible flash flooding about the north during Saturday.
Flood warnings, river and rainfall data is available here.
