NSW Severe Weather Warning: Damaging Winds
Source: Bureau of Meteorology

for damaging winds, destructive winds and blizzard conditions
for people in the Snowy Mountains, Australian Capital Territory, Riverina, Northern Tablelands, South Coast, Illawarra, Central West Slopes & Plains, South West Slopes, Hunter, Mid North Coast, Lower Western, Southern Tablelands and Central Tablelands forecast districts

Issued at 4:31 pm EST on Saturday 4 September 2010.
Weather Situation

An intense low pressure system over western Victoria will continue to move east this evening. This is generating wet and windy conditions across New South Wales, with particularly gusty winds over southern districts. Winds are expected to ease from the west tonight but will remain vigorous over the southeast until later Sunday as the low reaches the Tasman Sea.

Destructive winds averaging 70 km/h with peak gusts around 130 km/h are forecast for the South Coast, Illawarra, Southern Tablelands and Snowy Mountains forecast districts.

Alpine Peaks may experience winds averaging 100 km/h with peak gusts around 140 km/h

Blizzard conditions are forecast for the Snowy Mountains forecast district.

Damaging winds averaging 50 km/h with peak gusts around 90 km/h are forecast for the Australian Capital Territory, Lower Western and Central Tablelands forecast districts and parts of the Northern Tablelands, Riverina, Central West Slopes & Plains, South West Slopes, Hunter and Mid North Coast forecast districts.

During this afternoon, wind gusts in excess of 90 km/h have been recorded at Cabramurra and Broken Hill. Average wind speeds over 60 km/h have been recorded at Broken Hill, White Cliffs and Orange.

Rain and showers are still affecting many districts this evening, however flash flooding is no longer expected. As a result of earlier rainfall, Flood Warnings are current for the Castlereagh, Murrumbidgee, and Murray Rivers.

The State Emergency Service advises that people should:

* Move vehicles under cover or away from trees.
* Secure or put away loose items around your house, yard and balcony.
* Keep clear of fallen power lines.
