NSW Severe Weather Warning: Damaging Winds
Source: Bureau of Meteorology

for people in the Snowy Mountains, Metropolitan, Australian Capital Territory, South Coast, Illawarra, Hunter, Southern Tablelands and Central Tablelands forecast districts

Issued at 10:02 am EST on Sunday 5 September 2010.
Weather Situation

An intense low pressure system southeast of Tasmania will continue to move east. This is generating windy conditions across New South Wales, with particularly gusty winds over southeastern districts this morning. Winds are expected to gradually ease this afternoon.

Damaging winds averaging 50 km/h with peak gusts around 100 km/h are forecast for the Metropolitan, Australian Capital Territory, Illawarra, Southern Tablelands and Snowy Mountains forecast districts and parts of the South Coast, Central Tablelands and Hunter forecast districts.

The severe weather warning for parts of the Lower Western and South West Slopes forecast districts has been cancelled, but the situation will continue to be monitored and further warnings will be issued if necessary.

During the last four hours wind gusts in excess of 90 km/h have been recorded at a number of locations including Braidwood, Bellambi, Wollongong Airport, Cooma, Ulladulla and Mount Ginini. With the highest observed gust being 110 km/h at Bellambi.

As a result of earlier rainfall, Flood Warnings are current for the Castlereagh, Murrumbidgee, and Murray Rivers.

The State Emergency Service advises that people should:

* Move vehicles under cover or away from trees.
* Secure or put away loose items around your house, yard and balcony.
* Keep clear of fallen power lines.
* Don't drive, ride or walk through flood water.
* Keep clear of creeks and storm drains.
* Beware of fallen trees or debris on the road.
