STRONG ALPINE WINDS TODAY WITH THE PASSAGE OF A COLD FRONT
A front and its associated trough are moving across southern New
South Wales and the Australian Capital Territory today. Vigorous
northwesterly winds over the Alpine region are expected to ease by
early afternoon as the front moves away.
DAMAGING WINDS, averaging 70 to 80 km/h with peak gusts in excess
of 120 km/h are likely over the Alpine peaks above 1900 metres this
morning. DAMAGING WINDS, averaging 60 to 70 km/h with peak gusts in
excess of 90 km/h, are also possible over Alpine ranges and parts
of ACT between 1500 metres and 1900 metres in elevation.
Winds are expected to ease by early afternoon as the front moves
away from the warning area.
Locations which may be affected include Thredbo, Perisher Valley,
Charlotte Pass and Mount Ginini.
Thredbo Top Station AWS has recorded mean wind speeds of 80 km/h
or more from 5am, with a peak wind gust of 115 km/h at
5:07am.
The State Emergency Service advises that people should:
* Move vehicles under cover or away from trees.
* Secure or put away loose items around your house, yard and
balcony.
* Keep at least 8 metres away from fallen power lines or objects
that may be energised, such as fences.
* Trees that have been damaged by fire are likely to be more
unstable and more likely to fall.
* Report fallen power lines to either Ausgrid (131 388), Endeavour
Energy (131 003), Essential Energy (132 080) or Evoenergy (131 093)
as shown on your power bill.
* Stay vigilant and monitor conditions. Note that the landscape
may have changed following bushfires.
