Weather Situation: At 5:30pm ACST, radar and satellite imagery showed a number of squall lines and severe thunderstorms tracking towards the western Top End coastline. These thunderstorms are expected to persist over the coming hours as atmospheric conditions are favourable for severe thunderstorms.

Severe thunderstorms are likely to produce damaging winds in the warning area over the next several hours. Locations which may be affected include Darwin, Katherine, Palmerston, Wadeye, Nauiyu, Batchelor, Adelaide River, Pine Creek, Cooinda, Timber Creek, Dundee Beach and Peppimenarti.

At 4:53pm ACST, a 82km/h wind gust was reported at Tindal Airport.

The Northern Territory Emergency Service advises that people should:
* secure loose outside objects
* ensure pets and animals are safe
* avoid remaining in the open when storms threaten
* pull over if it is raining heavily and you cannot see, park with your hazard lights on until the rain clears
* avoid driving into water of unknown depth and current
