Severe thunderstorms with DESTRUCTIVE WINDS, GIANT HAILSTONES and INTENSE RAINFALL

Weather Situation: A significant upper level trough over central Australia is developing a rain band over central Queensland, producing embedded thunderstorms enhanced by some weak surface troughs of low pressure.

A cell approximately 50 km southeast of Mt Isa that is moving further southeastwards may produce INTENSE RAINFALL that may lead to life threatening flash flooding, GIANT HAIL and DESTRUCTIVE WINDS.

In other parts of the warning area

Severe thunderstorms are likely to produce damaging winds, large hailstones and heavy rainfall that may lead to flash flooding in the warning area over the next several hours. Locations which may be affected include Mount Isa, Cloncurry, Duchess, Selwyn and Mckinlay.

4-5 cm hail was observed west of Mt Isa earlier this evening.

Queensland Fire and Emergency Services advises that people should:
* Move your car under cover or away from trees.
* Secure loose outdoor items.
* Never drive, walk or ride through flood waters. If it's flooded, forget it.
* Seek shelter, preferably indoors and never under trees.
* Avoid using the telephone during a thunderstorm.
* Beware of fallen trees and powerlines.
