A cold front to the west will move through Bass Strait later today.

DAMAGING WINDS, averaging 60 to 70 km/h with peak gusts of around 100 km/h are likely to develop over the Alpine parts (above 1200 metres) of East Gippsland, North East and West and South Gippsland Forecast Districts tonight.

Some moderation is expected during Tuesday morning but winds could possibly restrengthen around the middle of Tuesday as a low pressure trough approaches from the west.

Locations which may be affected include Mt Baw Baw, Falls Creek, Mt Hotham and Mt Buller.

The State Emergency Service advises that people should:
* Move vehicles under cover or away from trees;
* Secure or put away loose items around your house, yard and balcony;
* Keep clear of fallen power lines;
