A trough over western Victoria will move slowly eastward across the State during the day.

DAMAGING WINDS, averaging 60 to 70 km/h with peak gusts of around 100 km/h are expected over the Alpine parts (above 1200 metres) of the East Gippsland, North East and West and South Gippsland Forecast Districts.

Winds are expected to ease during the late afternoon and early evening as the trough passes through the area.

Locations which may be affected include Mt Baw Baw, Falls Creek, Mt Hotham and Mt Buller.

The highest wind gusts recorded to 10:30am include:

- 100 km/h at Mount Buller at 2:35am

- 93 km/h at Mount Hotham at 8:28am

The State Emergency Service advises that people should:
* Move vehicles under cover or away from trees;
* Secure or put away loose items around your house, yard and balcony;
* Keep clear of fallen power lines;
