A bush fire is burning in the Goulburn River National Park, in the locations of Baerami, Baerami Creek, Widden, Yarrawa and Kerrabee.

The fire has burnt more than 11,825 hectares in size and is being controlled.

Current Situation

The fire is burning in Goulburn River National Park near the Bylong Valley Way and is close to properties in the areas of Baerami, Baerami Creek, Widden, Yarrawa and Kerrabee.

The fire crossed the Goulburn River Saturday afternoon near the intersection of Baerami Creek Road and the Bylong Valley Way.

Firefighters with the support of waterbombing aircraft and heavy machinery will work continue to work today to strengthen containment lines.

More favourable conditions are expected for the rest of the week with rain predicted on Thursday.

Bylong Valley Way is open to local residents only and remains closed to the general public until further notice.

The Golden Highway is not under threat, however, if conditions change, it may close at short.

What you need to do

If you are in the locations of Baerami, Baerami Creek, Widden, Yarrawa, Kerrabee, Worondi Creek Rd, Sandy Hollow, Giants Creek and Gungal, stay alert and monitor your surroundings.

The Bylong Valley Way is open to local traffic only and remains closed to the general public until further notice. Be aware of ongoing firefighting operations in the area and drive to conditions for your safety and that of the firefighters.

If you are threatened by fire

If the fire impacts, seek shelter in a solid structure such as a house to protect yourself from the heat of the fire.

Bring pets indoors and restrain them, close all doors and windows and turn off air conditioners, keep water running if possible.

Shelter in a room on the other side of the building from the approaching fire, and one that has water and a clear exit out of the house.

Monitor both inside and outside for small fires and burning embers and turn sprinklers on if you have them.

Be careful outdoors after the fire has passed as trees can be unstable and fall.

Evacuation centres

If you need to evacuate, it is best to stay with friends or family.

Evacuation centres are being opened to affected community members in the following locations:

Merriwa

Merriwa Showground (Dutton St, Merriwa) is open for cattle/horses/small ruminants/poultry and domestic dogs/cats. Please provide water buckets/troughs in addition to feed. Please ensure domestic dogs/cats are secured in crates/carriers.

Denman

Denman Pony Club (20 Bell Street Denman) is open now, only suitable for horses or cattle. Please provide water buckets/troughs in addition to feed and note there is minimal shade.

Community Meeting

A community meeting will be held today, Tuesday 9 December, at Sandy Hollow Community Hall Golden Highway, Sandy Hollow at 5pm.
