Issued at 12:30 pm ACST on Friday 20 February 2026 Flood Watch
Number: 2
RIVER LEVEL RISES AND AREAS OF FLOODING ARE EXPECTED ACROSS THE
FLOOD WATCH AREA FROM SATURDAY INTO EARLY NEXT WEEK
A trough sits over central parts of the Northern Territory,
building moisture across central and southern districts, and a low
pressure system is expected to develop within the trough over the
coming days. This is expected to bring thunderstorms and widespread
significant rainfall across the Flood Watch Area, with the risk of
isolated heavier falls. This rainfall will result in river and
creek level rises and areas of flooding from Saturday across the
Barkly and Georgina River catchments. In the MacDonnell Ranges,
Finke River, Stephenson Creek and Simpson Desert catchments
flooding is possible from early next week.
Catchments are wet across the Flood Watch Area.
The accumulated rainfall over the next few days will be
significant. River and creek level rises, localised flooding, and
overland inundation are expected across parts of the Flood Watch
Area, which will affect road access in many areas in the coming
days. Some communities will become isolated. Check road conditions
before travelling
A Flood Watch is current in South Australia for the Finke River,
Stephenson Creek and Simpson Desert.
Catchments likely to be affected include:
Georgina River and Eyre Creek
Finke River and Stephenson Creek
MacDonnell Ranges
Simpson Desert
Barkly (for southern areas)
