Heavy rainfall about the western Top End, becoming more likely
tonight.
Weather Situation: A tropical low is positioned about the
southwest Arnhem district, embedded within a trough extending into
the Carpentaria district. The low is expected to remain slow-moving
over the next 24 hours, with broad areas of heavy rainfall on its
western flank.
HEAVY RAINFALL which may lead to FLASH FLOODING is forecast for
parts of the Daly and far western Arnhem districts. Six-hourly
rainfall totals between 90 to 140 mm are likely.
There is high degree of uncertainty regarding the progression of
heavy rainfall over the Top End into Saturday. However the most
likely outcome is a slow westwards progression of areas of heavy
rainfall tonight, and a gradual easing through Saturday.
Locations which may be affected include Wadeye, Nauiyu, Batchelor,
Adelaide River, Pine Creek and Palumpa.
Severe weather is no longer occurring in the Carpentaria district
and the warning for this district is CANCELLED.
155.5 mm of rainfall was recorded at Theyona Station in the 6
hours to 3:46 pm.
111 mm of rainfall was recorded at Birdie Creek in the 6 hours to
7:16 am.
104 mm of rainfall was recorded at Edith Falls Ridge in the 6
hours to 7:21 am.
The Northern Territory Emergency Service advises that people
should:
* secure loose outside objects and seek shelter when conditions
deteriorate
* pull over if it is raining heavily and you cannot see, park with
your hazard lights on until the rain clears
* avoid driving into water of unknown depth and current
* create your own sandbags if there is flooding, by using pillow
cases or shopping bags filled with sand and place them around
doorways to protect your home
* stay away from flooded drains, rivers, streams and
waterways
* ensure pets and animals are safe
* be prepared in case of power outages, have an emergency kit with
a radio, torch, spare batteries and first aid kit
